How to Change a Reel Cover After Posting (and Check How It Looks on Your Grid)

The Reel is up, it's doing fine, and the cover is the one frame where you blinked. You don't have to live with it. Instagram lets you change the cover of a published Reel, and doing so touches nothing else: not views, not comments, not where it sits in your grid.

Here's the exact flow, the second crop most people miss, and the two reasons a new cover sometimes doesn't appear.

The Taps

1. Open the Reel from your profile.
2. Tap the three dots (bottom right on the Reel, or top right depending on your view).
3. Tap Edit.
4. Tap Edit cover (on some versions, tap the cover thumbnail itself).
5. Either scrub the timeline to pick a frame from the video, or tap Add from camera roll to upload a designed cover.
6. Tap Adjust profile grid preview (or drag the crop box) to choose which part of the cover shows on your grid. See below.
7. Tap Done, then Done again on the edit screen.

The whole thing takes about a minute. The Reel's metrics and position don't change.

The Second Crop Nobody Adjusts

Your cover is displayed in two places at two shapes:

• Full-screen (9:16) when someone opens the Reel or sees it in the Reels tab.
• Grid (3:4) on your profile, since the grid moved to taller rectangles in 2025.

The grid version is a crop of the full-screen version, and Instagram picks the center by default. That's why text at the top of a cover disappears on the grid and why so many grids show a cover's chin instead of its headline.

The Adjust profile grid preview step lets you slide the crop up or down. Do it every time. If you designed a cover with a headline, put the headline in the middle third of the 9:16 frame so it survives both crops; the cover sizing guide has the exact safe zones.

Why the New Cover Doesn't Show

Two causes, both boring:

1. Cache. Instagram keeps the old thumbnail around for a while, sometimes an hour or more, especially on the web and in other people's apps. Force-close, wait, reopen. Ask a friend to check on their phone. If they see the new one and you don't, it's your cache.

2. The edit didn't save. The cover editor has its own Done button, and the edit screen has another. Skipping the second one discards the change. Redo the flow and tap both.

If the cover changed on the Reel but not on the grid, or the reverse, that's the two-crop thing again: you changed one and not the other. Go back to Adjust profile grid preview.

Should You Change It at All?

Sometimes the better move is leaving it.

Change it when:

• The current cover is a mid-blink frame, a blur, or a black frame from a transition.
• Your grid has a consistent look and this one breaks it.
• The Reel is old and still gets profile traffic; a better cover earns more taps from visitors.
• You're rearranging your grid and want covers that read as a set.

Leave it when:

• The Reel is under 48 hours old and still being distributed. A cover change is harmless, but the Reel's audience right now is the Reels feed, where covers don't appear, so it's not the thing to spend time on.
• The cover is fine and you're fiddling. Covers matter for profile visitors, not for feed reach. A Reel that isn't spreading has a hook problem, not a cover problem.

Uploading a Designed Cover vs Picking a Frame

Picking a frame is fast and always matches the video. Uploading a designed cover gets you a headline, a consistent style, and a grid that reads like a magazine rack. The tradeoffs:

• Designed covers don't appear in the Reels feed (viewers see the video's first frame there), so they only work on your profile and in shares. That's fine; that's the audience they're for.
• Uploaded covers must be 9:16 or Instagram will letterbox them. Size for full-screen, then check the grid crop.
• Keep text out of the top and bottom sixths so it survives the 3:4 grid and the Reels UI overlays.

If you've been meaning to unify your grid, this is the cheapest way to do it: an afternoon changing old covers changes nothing about the Reels and everything about how a new visitor reads the profile.
