TikTok Icons and Symbols Explained: Every Button on the Video, the Profile, and in Analytics
TikTok explains none of its icons, on the theory that everyone learned them by scrolling. Most people did, for the main five. The rest, from the badges that appear on some videos to the symbols in analytics, are guessed at. Here's the full inventory, sorted by where you'll see it.
The Right Rail (Viewer Side)
Top to bottom on any video:
Profile picture with a red plus — Tap the picture to open the creator's profile; tap the plus to follow. The plus disappears once you follow.
♡ Heart — Like. Double-tapping the video does the same. Likes are the lightest signal TikTok reads; watch time and completion outweigh them heavily in how the For You feed decides.
💬 Speech bubble — Comments. The number is the comment count. Replies with video (a creator responding to a comment with a new video) show a small video icon on the comment.
🔖 Bookmark — Favorites. Saves the video privately. Some versions show this as a ribbon. Saves are a strong signal, and TikTok counts them in analytics under "Saves."
➦ Arrow — Share. Opens the sheet: send to friends, copy link, share to other apps, and the repost option (two arrows), which puts the video in your followers' For You feeds with your name attached. The repost button's exact behavior confuses people, mostly because it's invisible on your own profile.
💿 Spinning disc — The sound. Tap to open the audio page. The picture in the disc is the audio's originator; if it matches the creator, the video uses original sound. A small "Original sound" label under the caption confirms it.
Badges on the Video Itself
Small labels that appear on some videos, not all:
- "Original sound" — Audio created with this video, not a library track.
- Sound name with a musical note — A library or trending sound. Tap to see how many videos use it.
- "Paid partnership" — The creator disclosed a brand deal.
- "Sponsored" — An ad, or a video someone paid to Promote.
- "Creator disclosed AI" / AI label — The creator marked the content as AI-generated, or TikTok detected it.
- Green screen icon — Made with the green screen effect.
- Duet / Stitch labels — The video is a duet or stitch of someone else's, with their handle credited.
- Series icon — Part of a paid Series.
- Photo icon with a count — A photo carousel; swipe to see more.
- Location pin — A tagged place.
- Shopping bag or cart — A product from TikTok Shop is linked.
Profile Icons
On any profile:
- Blue check — Verified. Applied by TikTok, not purchased (unlike Meta Verified).
- Bell (after following) — Notification settings for that creator's posts and Lives.
- Three tabs above the grid: the grid icon (videos), the repost icon (their reposts, visible only if they've enabled it), and the heart (liked videos, if they've made them public). On your own profile you also see a bookmark tab (favorites) and a lock tab (private videos).
- Pin icon on a video — Pinned to the top of the grid. Up to three.
- Eye with a number — View count, shown on each video in the grid.
- Lock on a video — Private. Only you can see it. Useful as a drafts backup.
- People icon on a video — Friends-only visibility.
- Link icon in the bio — An external link, available once you meet TikTok's threshold or have a business account.
Analytics Icons (Creator Side)
In a video's analytics:
- 👁 Eye — Views. Total plays including loops.
- ♡ — Likes, 💬 — Comments, ➦ — Shares, 🔖 — Saves. Same as the rail.
- ⏱ Clock — Total play time and Average watch time. The second one, compared to video length, is the retention number that matters most.
- Percentage with a bar — Watched full video. Completion rate. The single best predictor of whether TikTok keeps distributing a video.
- Pie or bar — Traffic source. For You, Following, Search, Profile, Sound. A high Search share is worth money if you're in Creator Rewards.
- Retention graph — Where viewers dropped off, second by second.
- Warning triangle or info icon — The video has a notice: under review, not eligible for recommendation, or a sound restriction. These are the icons to check first when views collapse.
The Icons That Should Change What You Do
Three, if you make videos:
- The completion percentage. Below your usual number, the hook or the length is wrong.
- The traffic source pie. For You share shrinking while Following holds is the signature of distribution slowing down.
- Any warning icon on the video. Read it before touching anything else; it explains more than the numbers do.
Everything else is context. The rail icons are how viewers respond; the analytics icons are how TikTok tells you what it did with that response.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do the icons on the right side of a TikTok mean?
From top to bottom: the profile picture with a plus follows the creator, the heart likes, the speech bubble opens comments, the bookmark saves the video to your favorites, the arrow shares it, and the spinning disc at the bottom opens the sound used in the video. The repost icon appears in the share sheet on most versions.
What does the spinning circle at the bottom of a TikTok mean?
It's the sound. The disc shows the profile picture of whoever originally created the audio, and tapping it opens the sound page with every video that uses it and a button to make your own. If the disc shows the creator's own picture, the video uses original sound.
What do the symbols on a TikTok profile mean?
The blue check is verification. The lock on the video grid marks private videos. The pinned icon marks up to three videos fixed to the top of the grid. The heart tab shows videos you liked, the bookmark tab shows saved videos, and the small eye with a line through it on a video means it's set to private or friends-only.
What does the eye icon mean on my TikTok video?
The eye with a number on your own video in your grid is the view count. In analytics, the eye marks views. An eye with a slash marks a video whose visibility is restricted, either by you or by TikTok.
