How to Tell If Someone Blocked You on Instagram: 7 Checks, No Third-Party Apps

Instagram will not tell you. There's no notification, no list, no setting. That silence is deliberate, and it's why a whole category of "see who blocked you" apps exists to sell you an answer they can't actually get.

You don't need them. A block leaves enough fingerprints that seven checks inside the app itself get you to a confident answer, usually within two minutes.

The Seven Checks, in Order of Reliability

1. The logged-out test (definitive). Open instagram.com/their_username in a private browser window, or from a second account you already own. If the profile loads there but fails from your account, you're blocked. If it fails everywhere, the account is deactivated, deleted, suspended, or renamed, and no block is involved. This single test settles it. Everything below is for when you can't or don't want to run it.

2. The DM name test. Open your conversation with them. A blocked person's name and picture stay on the thread; only tapping through fails. If the name has changed to "Instagram User", they deactivated or deleted, which is a different thing entirely.

3. The half-loaded profile. Search their handle. A blocked profile often still appears, with the post count visible but the grid reading "No posts yet," and follower/following lists that won't open. A deactivated account doesn't appear in search at all.

4. The Follow error. On that half-loaded profile, tap Follow. A block usually produces "Something went wrong" or a button that flips back instantly. If everything else in your app works and only this profile errors, that's the block being enforced.

5. Your comments vanished from their posts. If you remember commenting on one of their posts and can still find it (via a mutual's share or a saved link), your comment will be gone from your view. Blocks hide your interactions from both sides.

6. Their Stories and old tags disappeared. Their ring is gone from your tray, and photos where they tagged you no longer show the tag. On its own this could mean they unfollowed you or set their account to private, so treat it as supporting evidence, not proof.

7. The mutual test. Ask a mutual follower to open the profile. If they see posts and you see nothing, the block is confirmed. This is the social version of check one, and it comes with the obvious cost of involving someone else.

What Isn't a Block

Half the "I think I'm blocked" cases are one of these instead:

• They went private and you don't follow them. You'll see the profile, the bio, and "This account is private." Blocked profiles don't show a bio.
• They restricted you. You see everything as normal. The only symptom is that your comments get no replies and your DMs get no read receipts. Restrict is designed to be undetectable, and it mostly is.
• They unfollowed you. Their content stops appearing in your feed, but the profile opens fine.
• They changed their username. Old links fail; the account is fine under its new name. If you have DMs, tapping their name in the thread opens the renamed profile.
• They deactivated. The profile fails from everywhere and their name becomes "Instagram User" in your inbox.

Why Every "Who Blocked Me" App Is a Bad Idea

Instagram doesn't expose block data through its API, to anyone. That means any app promising a list of who blocked you is doing one of three things: guessing from follower changes (which conflates unfollows, deactivations, and blocks), showing you nothing useful behind a subscription, or collecting your login credentials. The third is the common one, and it's how accounts get hijacked. Handing your password to a third party also violates Instagram's terms, which can get your own account restricted.

The in-app checks above cost nothing and are more accurate than anything these tools can offer.

What to Do Once You Know

If you were blocked, the answer is nothing. Instagram gives the blocked party no appeal because there's nothing to appeal; the other person made a decision about their own account. Making a new account to reach them anyway breaks Instagram's rules and, more importantly, ignores a clear signal.
