What 'Suggested for You' on Instagram Means (and Why Certain People Keep Showing Up)
The "Suggested for you" row shows up under posts, on profiles, in the feed, and in the Discover People screen, and the same face keeps appearing in it. That face is usually someone with a plausible connection: a coworker, an ex, a friend of a friend, someone you met once. Which raises the question everyone actually wants answered: does this mean they looked me up?
Here's what the list is built from, what it isn't, and how to shape it.
What Feeds the Suggestions
Instagram has described the inputs in broad terms, and they're consistent with what people observe:
- Mutual follows. The strongest signal. If you and someone share a lot of followers or follows, you'll be suggested to each other.
- Synced contacts. If either of you has uploaded your phone contacts (or Facebook friends), and the other's number or email is in there, that's a match. This is why people you've never followed but have in your phone appear.
- Accounts you've interacted with. Liked, commented, DMed, searched for, or visited, recently.
- Accounts followed by people you follow. Second-degree connections.
- Inferred interests. Accounts similar to ones you engage with, by category and content.
- Location and network signals, used loosely.
The list is ranked, and it refreshes. Someone can appear, disappear, and reappear as the signals shift.
Does It Mean They Looked at My Profile?
The honest answer is: it might be one input, but you can't tell, and it's usually not the reason.
Instagram doesn't expose profile views to anyone, and it hasn't confirmed that a person visiting your profile puts you in their suggestions or them in yours. What is confirmed is that mutuals and contacts drive most of it. If someone from your past keeps showing up, the overwhelmingly likely explanation is that you share friends or one of you has the other's number saved. Reading a suggestion as "they searched for me" is the same trap as reading Story viewer order as surveillance: the data doesn't say that.
It's also not symmetrical. Each person's list is ranked on their own activity. You seeing them tells you nothing about whether they see you.
Where the Suggestions Appear
- Under a post you just followed someone from. A row of similar accounts. Dismiss with the X.
- On a profile, when you tap the person-plus button. Accounts similar to that one.
- In your feed, as a "Suggested for you" card between posts.
- In Discover People, the longer list on your own profile.
- In the search tab, before you type.
- In Reels, as "Suggested" accounts on some Reels from people you don't follow.

How to Change What You See
- Dismiss with the X. Repeatedly dismissed accounts come back less often.
- Unsync contacts. Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Upload contacts → off, and delete previously uploaded contacts. This removes the single biggest source of "how does it know about them."
- Stop visiting their profile. Recent activity keeps accounts in rotation. Curiosity feeds the loop.
- Unfollow the mutual bridges, if it matters that much. Usually it doesn't.
How to Change Whether You're Suggested to Others
- Turn off "Similar account suggestions." Edit profile → scroll down → toggle off. This stops your profile appearing in the row under other accounts' profiles. It doesn't remove you from contact-based or mutual-based suggestions entirely.
- Go private. Private accounts are still suggested, but with less to preview.
- Don't sync your contacts, which removes you from other people's contact matches only if they haven't synced yours either. You can't control their phone.
The Creator Angle
If you want to be suggested, the inputs are the same signals in reverse:
- Overlap with accounts in your niche. Followers in common with three or four established accounts puts you in the row under their profiles, which is a steady trickle of relevant visitors. It's driven by being legibly in one niche.
- Keep "Similar account suggestions" on. It's the default; some people turn it off for privacy and forget it's the main way profile-to-profile discovery works.
- A profile that converts the visit. Suggestion traffic is cold. A bio that says what you do in one line and a top row of posts that show it are what turn a suggestion into a follow.
"Suggested for you" is Instagram guessing who you might know or like, from signals mostly about your friends and your phone. The guess is often uncanny, and it's almost never the thing it feels like.
