Instagram DMs Not Sending? Why Messages Fail, Stay Grey, or Never Deliver, and the Fix for Each
DM problems come in three shapes and people treat them as one. A message that fails to leave your phone, a message that leaves but never delivers, and a message that delivers but is never read have different causes, and only the first one is something you can fix.
Here's how to tell which you've got, and what to do about each.
Shape 1: It Won't Send
Symptoms: a red exclamation mark, "Failed to send," or the message stuck on a spinner. Sometimes a "Try again later" banner.
Causes, in order of likelihood:
- Connection. Switch Wi-Fi to cellular or back. Most failures.
- A rate limit. If you sent many messages in a short window, especially identical ones, Instagram paused your sending. Same system as Action Blocked. Stop for an hour.
- Outdated app. Update.
- An attachment problem. A video too long, a file too large, or a link to a domain Instagram blocks. Send the text alone to test.
- A broader outage. If the feed won't load either, wait.
Fix: tap the failed message → Retry after switching networks. If it still fails, force-close the app and try again from the thread. If every message to everyone fails, it's 1, 3, or 5. If only messages to one person fail, see Shape 2.
Shape 2: It Sends but Never Delivers
Symptoms: the message shows "Sent" (one grey check, or the word) and never moves to "Delivered." Messages to other people deliver normally.
This is the shape people search for most, and it usually means the recipient's account can't receive from yours. Causes:
- They blocked you. The thread stays on your side; messages sit on Sent forever. Their profile won't open from your account.
- They deactivated or deleted. Their name in the thread becomes "Instagram User" and the thread is read-only.
- They restricted you. Restrict is quieter: your message does deliver, to their Requests folder, without a read receipt. From your side it may sit on Delivered without ever showing Seen. If it never even shows Delivered, that's a block, not a restrict.
- Their message settings exclude you. People can set who's allowed to message them (everyone, followers only, no one). If you're not in the allowed group, your message may go to Requests or not be accepted.
Fix: none on your side. If a message to one person stays on Sent for a day while others deliver, the answer is one of the above, and there's no setting that changes it. The DM status icons reference walks through what each state means if you're unsure which you're seeing.
Shape 3: It's Delivered but Never Seen
Symptoms: "Delivered," no "Seen," for days.
Causes:
- It's in their Requests folder. You don't follow each other, so they weren't notified. Common for creators receiving DMs from strangers; it's also where messages from people you don't follow land.
- They turned off read receipts. Newer versions of Instagram let people disable them. The message was read; you just don't see it.
- They restricted you. Your messages go to Requests indefinitely and never show Seen.
- They haven't opened it. The boring answer, and often the true one.
Fix: none, and mostly none needed. If it matters, one follow-up after a few days is reasonable; a fourth message in a row is how rate limits get triggered.

If Your Own DMs Aren't Arriving
The reverse problem: people say they messaged you and you see nothing.
- Check Requests (the inbox's top-right link, or the Requests tab). Also check the "Hidden requests" sub-folder, where Instagram files messages it thinks are spam.
- Check your message controls: Settings → Messages and story replies → Message controls. If it's set to followers only, non-followers land in Requests or are blocked entirely.
- Check your blocked and restricted lists. An accidental restrict from a comment thread is common.
- Check the Primary/General split. Business accounts have two inbox tabs, and General doesn't send notifications by default.
