Instagram Insights Icons Explained: The Paper Plane, the Bookmark, and Everything Else in Your Analytics
Instagram's Insights screen is mostly numbers with a tiny icon next to each, and the icons are doing more work than they look like. Confuse the paper plane with the send button, or assume "views" means people, and every conclusion you draw from the screen is off.
Here is every icon in Insights, what it counts, and which three you should actually look at each week.
The Engagement Row
At the top of any post's Insights, a row of five icons with numbers under them. They match the icons under the post itself, because they count the same taps.
♡ Heart — Likes. Total likes. The lowest-effort action and the lowest-signal number in the row.
💬 Speech bubble — Comments. Total comments, including replies. Instagram weights longer comments and threaded replies more than one-word ones, but the count doesn't distinguish.
✈ Paper plane — Shares. Every send: to a DM, to a Story, to another app, or via copied link. This is the number that most reliably correlates with a post breaking out of your existing audience, because each share is a new pair of eyes you didn't already have.
⇄ Two arrows — Reposts. How many people reposted your post to their own profile. Newer than the others (the repost feature arrived in 2025), and it behaves like a share that doesn't expire.
🔖 Bookmark — Saves. How many people saved the post. The strongest signal that content was useful rather than merely liked, and the one most creators under-track.
The Reach Block
👁 Views. Total plays or displays, including repeats from the same account. Instagram unified this across all formats in 2024. It's the big headline number, and it's the one most easily inflated.
👥 Accounts reached. Unique accounts that saw the post at least once. Tap in and it splits into followers and non-followers, which is the most useful breakdown in the whole screen: it tells you whether the post stayed inside your audience or left it. The views vs accounts reached ratio is worth computing for any post you care about.
Accounts engaged. Unique accounts that did anything: liked, commented, shared, saved, reposted. Compare it to accounts reached to get an engagement rate that isn't distorted by repeat plays.
Interactions. The sum of the engagement row. Useful as a single number to compare posts of the same type.
Profile Activity
Below the reach block, a section that most people scroll past and shouldn't.
- Profile visits — people who tapped through to your profile from this post.
- Follows — people who followed you from this post.
- External link taps / Email / Call — taps on the contact buttons in your bio, attributed to this post.
This is the only place Insights measures conversion. A post with mediocre likes but ten follows did more for the account than a post with triple the likes and none. If your bio isn't converting, it'll show up here as high profile visits and low follows.
Reels-Specific Icons
Reels Insights add a few:
- ▶ with a clock — Watch time. Total seconds watched across all plays.
- Average watch time. Watch time divided by plays. Compare it to the Reel's length; that ratio is the real retention number.
- Retention chart. A curve of what percentage of viewers were still watching at each second. The drop in the first three seconds is your hook's report card, and the pacing after that is the rest of the video's.
- Replays. On some builds, shown separately: how many plays were second or later plays by the same account.
Story Icons
Story Insights use slightly different labels:
- 👁 Views and Viewers — plays vs unique people.
- → Forward taps and ← Back taps — people skipping ahead vs going back to reread.
- Next story — people who swiped to someone else's Story. The exit that hurts.
- Exited — people who left Stories entirely.
- Replies, Shares, Sticker taps — interactions specific to the Story format.
The full Story analytics guide covers what a healthy ratio of these looks like.
The Three to Check Weekly
- Non-follower share of accounts reached. Is your content leaving your audience? If it's under 10 percent on most posts, nothing is spreading.
- Saves plus shares per 1,000 accounts reached. A single number for "was this worth keeping or passing on." Track it by post type and you'll see which formats earn it.
- Follows from profile activity. The only number that directly measures growth per post.
Everything else in Insights is context for those three. Likes, in particular, are the number Instagram shows biggest and the one that matters least.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the paper airplane mean on Instagram Insights?
The paper airplane is Shares. It counts every time someone sent your post to another person in a DM, added it to their Story, or shared it outside Instagram. It's one of the strongest signals the ranking system uses, because a share puts your post in front of someone who wasn't following you.
What do the icons at the top of Instagram Insights mean?
The row of icons above a post's Insights shows, in order, the heart for likes, the speech bubble for comments, the paper airplane for shares, the two-arrow icon for reposts, and the bookmark for saves. Below them, Views counts plays, Accounts reached counts unique people, and Interactions totals the engagement icons.
What is the difference between views and interactions on Instagram Insights?
Views is how many times the post was displayed, including repeat plays. Interactions is the sum of actions people took on it: likes, comments, shares, reposts, and saves. A post with high views and low interactions was seen and skipped. High interactions relative to views means it earned a response.
What does profile activity mean in Instagram Insights?
Profile activity counts what people did after visiting your profile from the post: profile visits, follows, and taps on your website link, email, or call button. It's the closest Insights gets to measuring whether a post converted a viewer into a follower or a lead.
