Instagram Profile Icons Explained: Every Button, Tab, and Badge on a Profile Page

A profile page is where every Instagram icon shows up at once: the action buttons, the tabs, the badges on thumbnails, and, on business accounts, a second row of buttons most personal accounts never see. Here's the whole page, top to bottom.

For the icons inside posts, Stories, DMs, and Insights, the complete icon reference covers those.

The Header

Profile picture with a gradient ring — An active Story. Tap the ring to watch it. A green ring means Close Friends; no ring means no Story in the last 24 hours. On your own profile, a small plus on the picture lets you add a Story.

Blue check — Meta Verified (a paid subscription) or legacy verification. Both look the same now.

Threads badge — A small Threads logo, sometimes with a number, links to the account's Threads profile. The number is their Threads join order.

Category label — Grey text under the name ("Creator," "Photographer," "Restaurant"). Set by the owner on professional accounts.

Link icon — External links in the bio. Up to five, shown as a single line that expands.

Lock — The account is private.

The Buttons Under the Bio

On someone else's profile:

  • Follow / Following / Requested — Your relationship. Tap Following for a dropdown: Close Friends, Favorites, Mute, Restrict, Notifications, Unfollow.
  • Message — Opens a DM thread.
  • 👤+ Person with a plus — Expands suggested accounts similar to this one. It doesn't add anyone to anything; the full explanation covers all three places this icon appears.
  • Bell (in the Following dropdown, or in the header on some builds) — Notification settings for this account's posts, Stories, Reels, and Lives. Filled or checked means at least one is on.

On your own profile:

  • Edit profile — Name, bio, links, picture, and grid order.
  • Share profile — A QR code or a profile card to share.
  • Insights (professional accounts) — Your analytics.
  • Ad tools or Promote — Boosting from the profile.

The Tabs Above the Grid

Left to right:

  • ⊞ Grid — All feed posts. The default.
  • ▶ Reels — Reels only, as 9:16 thumbnails with view counts.
  • ⇄ Reposts — Posts and Reels the account has reposted. New since 2025, and only shown if the account has reposted anything.
  • 👤 Tagged — Posts by others that tagged this account.
  • Shop (on shopping-enabled accounts) — Product listings.
  • Guides / Notes / Highlights — Highlights sit as circles between the bio and the tabs; guides and other tabs appear only where the owner has enabled them.

The Top Row Is the Real Bio

Visitors read the first six thumbnails before the buttons. Slidy Creator gives every carousel a cover slide in the same template, so the grid answers 'what is this account' before anyone scrolls.

Badges on Thumbnails

Small icons in the corner of grid tiles:

  • ▶ Reel icon — A Reel. Shows the view count on hover or on the Reels tab.
  • Stacked squares — A carousel. Swipe inside for more slides.
  • 📌 Pin — Pinned to the top. Up to three.
  • Person silhouette — On the Tagged tab, marks who tagged it.
  • Shopping bag — A post with tagged products.
  • Collab avatars — A Collab post shared with another account; it appears on both profiles.
  • Infinity symbol — A Boomerang, on older posts. Explained here alongside its lookalike.

Since the grid moved to 3:4 tiles, these badges sit slightly differently, and covers crop differently than they did on squares.

Business and Creator Account Extras

Professional accounts get a second row of contact buttons under the bio, configurable in Edit profile → Contact options:

  • Email — Opens a mail draft.
  • Call — Dials.
  • Directions — Opens the address in a maps app.
  • Book / Reserve / Order — Action buttons tied to third-party services.
  • Contact — A combined button that expands into the available options.

These are the only profile elements that generate conversion metrics in Insights, which is one of the better arguments for switching to a professional account even if you're not a business.

The Profile Read in Three Seconds

A new visitor processes a profile in roughly this order: picture, name and category, bio, top row of the grid. Every icon above is noise to them except the ones that answer "who is this and what will I get." That's the picture, the category, the bio's first line, and the first three or six thumbnails. Spend your effort there; the rest of the icons take care of themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the icons on an Instagram profile?

Under the bio: Follow or Following, Message, and a person-plus button that shows suggested accounts. Above the grid: a grid icon for posts, a Reels icon, a two-arrow Reposts tab, and a tagged icon showing posts others tagged them in. On thumbnails: a Reel icon, a stacked-squares carousel icon, and a pin for pinned posts. Business accounts add contact buttons and a category label.

What does the grid icon with squares mean on Instagram?

The three-by-three grid icon above a profile's posts is the main Posts tab. Tapping it shows every feed post in the order they were published or the custom order the owner set. It's the default tab when you open a profile.

What does the tagged icon on an Instagram profile mean?

The icon of a person in a square is the Tagged tab. It shows posts by other accounts that tagged this profile. Owners can hide individual tagged posts or require approval before tagged posts appear.

What does the pin icon on an Instagram post mean?

A small pin in the corner of a thumbnail means the owner pinned that post to the top of their grid. Up to three posts can be pinned, and they stay first regardless of when they were published.
